 Thomas Gray, 1937 Poems
Thomas Gray
1937 Poems
Eton, Riccardi Press Fount of the Medici Society Limited, 1937. Vellum. A lovely collection of verses by Thomas Gray, privately printed for leavers of Eton College and presented in a vellum binding. Thomas Gray (1716-1771) was an English poet and letter-writer. Often considered to be a pre-Romantic poet, Gray declined the offer of Poet Laureate in 1757. His most famous poem 'An Elegy Written in a Country Courtyard' was first published in 1751 and popularised by Horace Walpole. Its reflectiveness and stoicism saw it immediately highly regarded and popular, with it having been translated into Latin and Greek, as well as pirated. The work considers the afterlife and death, foreshadowing the Gothic movement. Many phrases entered popular use as a result of Gray's coinage, amongst them 'kindred spirit', 'Far from the Madding Crowd' (later the title of a Thomas Hardy novel), 'celestial fire' and 'The Paths of Glory&apos.Bound in full vellum, and printed for Eton College. Presented to Robert Adrian Roberts on his leaving Eton in 1939. In a full paper vellum binding. Externally generally smart, with minor general wear to the vellum and bumping to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .

Thomas Gray
Designs by Mr. R. Bentley for Six Poems by Mr. T. Gray
London, R Dodsley, 1753. Leather. A scarce and handsome volume of illustrations to the work of Thomas Gray, in attractive leather binding. Curiously noted as 'designs', rather than poems, the title was written such in order to emphasise to readers that the poems were previously published by Gray, and not new works. Nonetheless, the handsome illustrations, of which there are six engraved plates as well as numerous vignettes and embellishments, make for a interesting and attractive collaborative volume. In quarter-calf binding with gilt detailing and paper-covered boards. Externally smart, there is some wear to the backstrip and extremities. Internally, the pages are firmly bound but are somewhat age-toned throughout. Very Good . Ill.: R Bentley. Very Good .
